You’ve probably got the basics of skin care down… You know that you need to cleanse and moisturize regularly, right?

That’s why today, we’re sharing a few tips that go beyond the basics.

Healthy, glowing skin doesn’t stop with a quick clean and moisturize!

1. Cleanse.

Cleaning your skin might sound basic, but a lot of people do it wrong.

What’s the wrong way to clean your skin, you wonder?

Using products that dry it out, for one.

You’re probably using a specialized cleanser on your face, and bar soap on your body. YIKES! Bar soaps, and even some body washes, can be full of harsh or drying ingredients.

What’s the difference in soaps?

All types of soaps do basically the same thing — remove dirt from the surface of your skin. The difference between them is in their ingredients and the way they remove the dirt.

As sweat and dirt mix with your body’s natural oils, it can settle on your skin and breed bacteria.

Bar soaps work by dissolving the dirt on the surface of your skin. They break up the oily layer and lift it away from your skin so that water washes it off.

Body washes use the same methods to get the dirt off your skin, but they often contain a mixture of ingredients to help treat common conditions like dryness, clogged pores, and flaking. Body washes also frequently contain ingredients that restore the moisture that can be stripped by cleansing.

Shower gels are basically less hydrating body wash formulas. These gels tend to cleanse your skin without infusing it with moisturizing ingredients.

So what’s right for your skin?

That will vary with every person, and with the season. Your skin’s needs will change over time, and it’s important to pay attention to the signs that what you’re using might not be working. Itchy skin, tightness, flaking, sallowness – all indicate that your skin needs something different.

Don’t be afraid of switching it up with the season to keep your skin silky smooth and happy!

Pro tip: Know your skin and pay attention to when it’s asking for a change. Use a gentle product that your skin responds to. For your body, you might be better with a body wash. If you’ve got sensitive skin, or if your skin is extra dry, our Psoriasis Shampoo + Body Wash is both gentle and hydrating. It’s made to help restore your skin’s natural moisture balance without irritation.

2. Moisturize.

You can never get enough moisturizer!

For your face, make sure you are moisturizing in the morning and at night. Maintaining a youthful appearance doesn’t stop at your chin.

Make sure to include your neck, and décolleté, too.

The best times to moisturize your body are right after you get out of the shower and right before you go to bed. After you shower, don’t take all of that water off with your towel. Allow a thin layer of it to be mixed with your moisturizer.

For best results, avoid lotions with heavy fragrances that can irritate sensitive skin. Pay extra attention to your elbows, knees, and heels. These areas are often extra-dry, thanks to the friction of your clothing.

3. Hydrate.

Hydration is not moisture.

Hydration = water, and moisture = oil.

If your skin is dehydrated, it is lacking water. And if your skin is dry, it is lacking oil.

Every skin expert we know can talk for days about the importance of hydration.

save your summer skin - stay hydrated

“A lack of water means less radiance and more sag,” says Dr. Mona Gohara, a dermatologist in Connecticut. Dr. Gohara suggests using skincare products with hydrating formulas.

The LuxeOrganix skincare line includes ingredients like aloe vera, red clover, glycerin, and glycine – humectant ingredients that help your skin attract and retain water.

Making sure that your skincare products do not dry out your skin, or better, help it retain water, is only half of the battle. You will still need to drink around eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated and keep your body working, and looking, its best.

4. Exfoliate a few times per week.

You lose 50 million skin cells a day, and without a little extra help, they may hang around leaving your skin looking dull and dry.

To fight this, you need to exfoliate. A few times per week with ReNew Exfoliating Face Mask Polishing Scrub will reveal softer, younger skin. Try it! It will not take more than a few weeks for a visible difference.

And don’t stop at your face — the skin on your body needs exfoliation, too. Your hands, elbows, knees, and feet take a beating every day. And you may also notice your elbow and knees darkening as you age. This can be the result of an accumulation of dead skin cells, friction from your clothing, and sun exposure. You can minimize and even reverse this by exfoliating regularly.

Scrub-a-dub-dub. Get those dead skin cells polished off with regular exfoliation!

5. Avoid direct heat.

It’s not just the sun that’s bad for your skin. Getting too close to the heat (think bonfires and fireplaces) can also cause issues. Heat causes inflammation and breaks down the collagen in your skin. Collagen is what keeps your skin plump, soft, and wrinkle-free.
So, the next time you’re toasting marshmallows for s’mores over an open fire or cozying up in front of a fireplace with your sweetie, take a step back.

6. Put your vitamins on.

Did you know you can get your vitamins by putting them ON your skin?

Topical antioxidants, like our Kakadu Vitamin C Skin Brightening Serum and our Vitamin C Moisturizer, contain vitamins that nourish your skin.

(We even hinted at that by putting “vitamin C” in their name!) You’ll find vitamins C, B5, and E along with other important botanical ingredients like reishi mushrooms, bakuchiol, and eyebright. These really all help to repair and nourish your skin from the inside.

The ingredients in your skincare products penetrate your skin and soak the innermost layers with the nutrition needed to keep your skin strong, regenerate skin cells, and heal the damage caused by free radicals, sun, and environmental toxins.

Not sure how to use topical antioxidants to get the most from them? The best time to apply them is right after cleansing so that your skin can soak them in. Clean your skin, then apply your serum, then your eye cream and moisturizer.
In the morning, let your serum and moisturizers sit for a few minutes before applying any makeup. You can also layer them under your sunscreen for added protection.

7. Maintain a healthy diet.

The nutrients you get from food (or supplements) help build and maintain a healthy body, including your body’s largest organ – your skin.

Your skin has a natural barrier that helps it retain moisture. Without moisture, your skin sags and looks old, sullen, wrinkled, and dry. One essential ingredient to keep that barrier strong is omega-3 fatty acids.

You can add a little omega-3 fatty acid to your diet with a teaspoon of flax seeds in your smoothie, or by snacking on a few walnuts. These give an instant boost to your omega-3 and increase your skin’s ability to hold onto moisture.
And we can’t tell you this enough — moisture is crucial to keeping your skin clear, smooth, and glowing.

8. Clean your makeup brushes.

To fight infection and clogged pores, you need to keep your makeup brushes clean. Top dermatologists recommend washing concealer and foundation brushes once a week. For brushes you use around your eyes, the recommendation is twice per month, and for any other brushes, once a month will do it. If your skin is sensitive, you might want to increase the frequency of this.

How do you clean them? Put a drop of mild shampoo in the palm of your hand. Wet the bristles of the brush with lukewarm water and massage the bristles into your palm, gently spreading the shampoo into the brush. Avoid getting the metal part of the brush wet because the glue could soften and the bristles could fall out. Rinse the shampoo out and squeeze out the water with a towel. Lay the brushes on their side with the bristles hanging off the edge of the counter to dry.

Pro tip: Have a few scrubbies that you got with your LuxeOrganix Facial Wash lying around? These make excellent brush cleaners! Rather than using your palm, put a drop of shampoo on a scrubby and use that to clean your brushes.

9. Sun protection is more than sunscreen.

“Preventing sun damage is a million times better for your skin than treating it after the fact,” says Dr. Janet Prystowsky M.D., a dermatologist in New York City.

We could not have said this better ourselves.

That’s why we use ingredients that help protect your skin from the sun and heal it from sun damage.

Like aloe vera, glycolic acid, and licorice root which we put in our Kakadu Skin Brightening Serum, Brilliant Eyes eye cream, and ReNew Exfoliating Face Scrub.
These ingredients penetrate deep into the layers of your skin, where they help prevent and repair damage from the sun (like hyper-pigmentation, and dryness).
They don’t replace your sunscreen, but they do help it fight the effects of the sun.

Oh, a good hat and sunglasses will help, too. Wear them out!

10. Sleep smarter.

While eight hours of sleep every night seems like an impossible dream, you can do more in your sleep to help your skin. And it’s easy…

Your skin will benefit from regularly using clean silk pillowcases.

We know you love nestling up on crisp cotton, but cotton attracts moisture – right out of your skin and your hair. And if you’ve ever woken up with wrinkles after a hard sleep, you can thank your pillowcase for that, too.

Any dermatologist will tell you that silk glides easily and prevents creasing and wrinkles. (No more morning pillow-face!) Silk is also easier on your hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage.

Better hair and skin while you sleep? Yes, you can!

Small Steps

Maybe jumping in with 10 big changes will make it tough to keep them all. But small steps — even one or two — will go a long way towards healthy, beautiful skin and hair.

So pick one and make it part of your routine this year. Glow up the easy way… one step at a time.
