Would you put sticky white marshmallows in your hair if we told you it would make your hair shinier?
…What if we said it would make your hair grow longer and stronger?
WAIT! Before you dig into that bag of Jet-Puffed, or plop a spoon into the Fluff, that’s not what we mean.
Marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis), a perennial herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa., is a water-loving plant that grows on the banks of rivers and marshes, where it got its name (marsh-mallow).
The root of this plant has healing, moisturizing, and soothing properties that make it effective for revitalizing both skin and hair.
What can marshmallow root do for you?
Traditionally, marshmallow root was used as a cure-all for just about every ailment from skin infection to respiratory and digestive ills. The candied root is the ingredient that gave its name to that yummy treat you roast on a stick.
More recently, marshmallow root has become the little darling of the beauty industry.
For Your Skin
When used on your skin, marshmallow root provides instant hydration and works to improve your skin’s ability to retain moisture.
The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties make it effective in wound healing and it may help relieve skin irritation caused by psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, and dermatitis.
Its antioxidant properties may also help repair both skin and hair from damage caused by free radicals and ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
For Your Hair
Since marshmallow root is similar to a plant-derived form of glycerin, an emollient that softens skin and moisturizes hair, it’s great for soothing your scalp and makes a powerful deep conditioning treatment. It’s also a natural detangler because of how slippery it is. The more slip you have, the easier it is to comb, brush, and run your fingers through your hair… which can help prevent tangles, damage, and breakage, and give you with much healthier hair.
That’s why we use marshmallow root in our Coconut Oil Deep Conditioner Hair Mask.
Marshmallow root is high in mucilage, a substance that coats and prevents irritation on your skin. Mucilage has got a lot of slip—the property that helps remove tangles and knots from your hair. It also binds to the proteins of your hair to make the strands look and feel thicker.
Marshmallow root nourishes your scalp, and it’s a great source of proteins and vitamins for your hair. These nutrients are effective for reducing hair breakage and you may notice more luster and bounce in your hair after a few uses. Marshmallow root’s protective, conditioning properties also support scalp health and prolong the growth cycle of hair.
If you’re using hair care products with marshmallow root, longer, thicker, stronger hair may be in your future.
We call that marshmallow magic!
