If you’ve taken a walk down any beauty aisle, you’ve likely seen 100’s of bottles of sulfate-free shampoo and wondered, “What’s sulfate, and why do I need to be free of it?”
Sulfates Are Harsh
Sulfates are the ingredients in many shampoos and soaps that makes it lather. Lathering isn’t bad on its own, but sulfates are harsh! They can strip your hair (and color) of essential oils and nutrients, which can cause your hair to become dull, dried-out, frizzy, and brittle. It can also irritate your scalp, leaving it dry and flakey.
Sulfate-Free Is The Way To Go
A sulfate-free shampoo, like LuxeOrganix Argan Oil Shampoo, will clean your hair just well as other shampoos. In fact, our shampoo is designed to clean your hair without stripping it, promoting healthy scalp and hair with ongoing use. Over time you may notice that your hair is stronger, less brittle, and more vibrant
Because they gently clean, sulfate-free shampoos are great for:
- Keratin and color-treated hair (they will not strip your treatments or color).
- Preventing frizz and dryness (they do not strip your hair’s protective natural oils).
- Increasing moisture in course hair (did we mention that they do not strip your hair’s protective natural oils?).
So, What May You Be Doing Wrong?
Many people complain that sulfate-free shampoos typically do not lather as much or clean as well as other shampoos that contain harsh sulfates.
The real problem is not the ingredients, but rather the way the shampoo is used.
And many people are doing it wrong.
Our sulfate-free shampoos, like our Rejuvenating Argan Oil Shampoo, will lather when you saturate your hair with water prior to and while massaging your scalp with your shampoo.
For amazing results, we’ve written down the best way to use a sulfate-free shampoo.
Step 1
Saturate your hair with warm water and massage your scalp to break up sediment and product residue before applying your shampoo.
Step 2
While your hair is still saturated, apply the shampoo and massage your scalp using the same technique your hairdresser uses when you go to your salon.
Starting at the scalp is vital. Like your hairdresser, spend 3 minutes on your scalp. It’s not just an impromptu scalp massage! Scrubbing the scalp helps remove the dirt, sebum, and build-up that collects there.
Spending less than three minutes is like quickly running a mop over a dirty floor rather than scrubbing the grime off. Ewww.
Step 3 IMPORTANT TIP… most people miss this!
Rinse your hair thoroughly. Make sure to really rinse it. Any residue from shampoo will make your hair feel heavy or unclean.
You may want to shampoo twice if you use styling products, dry shampoos, if your hair is thick or coarse, or if you go several days between washing and have extra build-up. The second shampoo really lifts the impurities and cleans your hair. Plus you’ll find the second shampoo lathers up more easily.
Step 4
Gently squeeze your hair to drain the excess water before applying your conditioner. You can use a wide tooth comb to spread it evenly through your hair and detangle it from ends to roots. Let your conditioner soak in for a few minutes.
If you’re using our Rejuvenating Argan Oil Shampoo, we recommend that you partner it up with the Rejuvenating Argan Oil Conditioner. Like Batman & Robin, this dynamic duo will rescue you… from bad hair, at least!
Step 5 ANOTHER GREAT TIP… don’t miss this one, either!
Rinse until your hair feels fully clean, and there’s no slippery texture. Thoroughly rinsing your hair is an essential last step to your washing routine.
You may have heard that it’s good to leave a little conditioner in your hair, but our Argan Oil conditioner is not a “leave-in conditioner.”
Lifeless hair is often the result of too much conditioner, or not rinsing conditioner well enough from your hair.
So… rinse, rinse, rinse!
